How Goal Setting Can Help You

You probably remember learning how to write essays in school. One of the first things you learned was how to make an outline. The outline kept you focused on what exactly you wanted to say in your essay. Without the outline, you might be going off into 10 directions at once.

Goal setting is an outline of your life. Without setting goals, you will end up living your life day by day and drifting aimlessly from one job, relationship or hobby to another. In order to succeed in life, you need to focus on what you want to do and set goals. Without goals, you are setting yourself up for failure.

All of us have the same future ahead of us. Anything can happen at any given moment and none of us has a guarantee of what tomorrow will bring. People who become successful recognize this and set goals accordingly. They understand that the future belongs to all of us and it is up to each individual to attain his or her success.

Some people are 40 years old and they do not know what they want to do with their lives. They have spent their entire life flitting from different jobs and relationships simply because they never sat down and figured out what would make them happy and did the outline on how to achieve a way to get what they wanted out of life. They never did the outline and the essay ended up all over the place and unfocused.

If there is something that you want in life, realize that you can get it by setting the right goals. Sit down and really think about what would make you happy. This could be a certain career, a monetary object or a personal relationship. Think of the “end result” and what you truly want.

Once you have a good idea of what you want to achieve in life, begin to think of ways that you can work towards your ultimate goal. Start by creating small goals for yourself. Think of it like an essay with each chapter being a short goal that ultimate leads to the conclusion - which is your ultimate goal.

If you think of your life like an essay and goal setting as an outline, it may be easier for you to relate to the concept of setting goals and why it is important to do so. Each day brings a new chapter into your life and while you cannot control everything in life, you can certainly strive towards a “happy ending” for your essay.

If you know what you want out of life, you can continue to strive towards that goal. Continue following the outline, make revisions when necessary and work towards a satisfying conclusion. Everything you do can be geared towards that happy ending in the essay of your life.
